Mimecast Wraps Up Fourth Annual Global Community Resilience Month

Mimecast was built on a simple idea: people are worth protecting. Every day, our teams work to keep organizations and the people inside them safe from the threats that target email, data, and human behavior.

Community Resilience Month is where that same purpose steps outside the office. For the past four years, Mimecasters across the world have dedicated the month of July to putting down their usual work and showing up for the communities around them.

Throughout the year, Mimecast offers a suite of programs that provides opportunities for them to engage within these spaces, such as up to $500 USD (or equivalent local currency), five days of paid volunteer leave, and opportunities to nominate nonprofit organizations for small grants. During Resilience Month, these opportunities are elevated, and Mimecasters are invited to increase their impact through regional volunteer opportunities, triple impact campaigns, and more.

This year, that show of support looked like:

  • 670+ volunteer hours
  • 18 events across 7 countries
  • 17 organizations
  • 200 employees

Mimecasters focused their time where it mattered most: protecting the environment, investing in young people, and fighting food insecurity. They helped analyze the latest images from the Great Barrier Reef, packed meals with food security organizations, mentored students through youth development programs, and got hands-on at local environmental projects and community farms.

These events are organized by our employee-led Community Champions team, Mimecasters passionate about spearheading and promoting community service initiatives and use their local expertise to find the most impactful ways to support the communities where we live and work.

Carolina Valencia, based in Hilversum, has organized multiple events for the team as a Community Champion, in partnership with Goodera, our partner in global corporate volunteering. “Being a Mimecast Community Champion has given me the chance to bring my team together around something bigger than our everyday work. I've seen firsthand how much joy and connection these days create; for the community we're supporting, and for our own team back in Hilversum. I'm grateful that Mimecast makes space for this; it reminds me that taking care of each other and our community isn't separate from our work, it's part of who we are.”

“There's something powerful about tackling a hands-on challenge together outside the office”, Zarina Osman, Community Champion in our London office adds, “it builds pride, purpose, and a real sense of team problem-solving, while also doing wonders for our mental well-being, both individually and as a group. I'm proud to be part of something so meaningful that gives back to our communities.”

Yonry Zhu and a few colleagues from our Columbus office spent their day at the Mid-Ohio Food Collective, sorting donations and checking food safety. "It's simple work, but you feel it," he said. "MOFC does so much for our region, and there's more need for it every year. I'm grateful to work somewhere that gives us real time to show up and give back, not just talk about it."

Matthew Baldino, who was Mimecast's team captain from the Lexington office for the Boston Children’s Hospital Corporate Cup, said the challenges were fun, but the real highlight was connecting directly with the kids. "Working for a company like Mimecast, which actively supports and encourages participation in events like this, is nothing short of inspiring," he said.

Larry Mezias, also based in Lexington, spent his day at Bridge Boston Charter School with a paintbrush in hand, turning blank pavement into hopscotch courts for recess. "It is very nice to work for a company that sponsors events like this and follows through by encouraging their employees to volunteer," he said.

Community impact resonated with some of Mimecast's newest team members, too. Finance summer interns Ryan O'Rourke and Daniel Cox joined the Bridge Boston group, trading their desks for a day outdoors alongside their full-time colleagues.

"It was great to get out of the office on such a nice day and be able to help out and make an impact on a nearby community," O'Rourke said. "I bonded with my coworkers and we worked together to beautify the school grounds."

For Cox, the day left a lasting impression. "Being able to work for a company that encourages its employees to give back to the community and come together as a team for something meaningful is extremely rewarding," he said. "Seeing how excited the kids were about the work we were doing reminded me why this kind of volunteering matters so much."

Community Resilience Month is proof that when Mimecasters are given the chance to give back, they don't hold back. This is who we are, and it's who we'll keep being.

Mimecast seeks to build a more resilient world for organizations and the people we serve, not only in our product and services, but in our commitment to the community and the planet. Stay tuned for our Fifth Annual Environmental, Sustainability, and Governance (ESG) Report to be released later this year to learn more about the most recent ways Mimecast has shown.
